Mud bricks usually only need soil and the energy of sunlight, so have very low signified energy and environmental effect. A mud brick is created by mixing soil with water and placing it in a mold, and staying for it to dry. The clay range of mud brick can range between 35% to 70%, and overall soil content may also contain silt, gravel, and pebbles.
Mud bricks can be made by the proprietor–builder, but are very work-intensive. Some firms now make commercial versions of mud brick.
When the mud bricks have been made, walls are laid in the conventional method of masonry, with courses bound by mud mortar or cement mortar. Mud brick delivers high levels of thermal mass, but downward insulation. For most Indian climates, additional insulation is needed with mud brick construction to attain desired results.
